Plumbing Expert Cautions Hosts of Holiday, Game Gatherings
Phoenix, Arizona - The holidays-especially Thanksgiving-and the Super Bowl create
a ten-week frenzy of plumbing incidents, but there are steps party hosts can take to
avoid that emergency call to the plumber, said Bill Palmer, chief operating officer of
Benjamin Franklin Plumbing.
"The day after Thanksgiving is our busiest day of the year," said Palmer. "The leftovers
get dumped down the drain and the toilets get far more traffic than usual. The result is a
massive clog at a time when you can least afford it-when you're entertaining guests.
The next day, we get inundated with calls."
A major culprit is that the grind capacity of household garbage disposers is often grossly
overestimated, leading users to attempt to dispose of corn cobs, turkey bones, celery,
rice and potato peels by simply dumping them down the drain.
"Unless you are using a commercial pulper system," said Palmer, "this sort of behavior
will lead to problems very quickly."
According to the Web site scottclogclinic.com, "Legend has it that during halftime of
football's Big Game in February, more than 350 million gallons of water flush through our
toilets as an estimated 90 million Americans use their facilities. That amount of flushing
equals seven minutes of water flowing over Niagara Falls, making the day of the Big
Game one of the cloggiest days of the year."
Steps to avoid plumbing emergencies include stocking restrooms with fast-dissolving
toilet paper, directing guests away from potentially problematic toilets, keeping a discreet
plunger near the toilet to allow guests to save face and take care of small clogs
themselves, ensuring shower drains are cleaned before overnight guests arrive, and
simply dumping leftover food directly into a garbage can instead of overburdening a
garbage disposer.
