The first fixtures you will want to check are the faucets. The easiest place to do that is the bathroom because then you can check the bathtub, drains and toilet all in the same place.
When checking your faucets, start with the handles. Make sure they don’t stick, if they are too hard to turn or too loose then something could be going wrong that you are not able to see. Then make sure you have a nice, even water flow. The water shouldn’t be spraying in all different directions but also shouldn’t be in one direct forceful stream.
Once you make sure the pressure is adjusted, it’s time to check the temperature. Leave the water running for a few minutes on cold and then on hot to make sure you have the right adjustments. Especially as we move into the colder months you will want to make sure the water heater is working well.
As important as it is that water flows through the faucet, it is equally important that the water flows through the drain. Is the water draining a little slow or is it even draining at all?
You will also want to make sure you look for dampness and corrosion underneath the sink and around any pipes that you have access too, whether it’s the bathroom or kitchen sink, toilet or even any pipes outside the home. Make sure you get any leak fixed right away because even the tiniest of leaks can turn into a very big problem.
So that is a few tips you can check for around any house you are looking to rent or purchase, but remember not every problem is visible. It is always best to have a professional plumber check for any major problems like ones you would have with your hot water heater.
