Very few of us use our tap water for drinking or for our coffee makers and tea pots. Buying cases of bottled water can be inconvenient and expensive. If you think of a whole house filtration system as being a prescription drug, consider these your “over the counter” alternatives.

Many people start with a water-filtering pitcher water filters like Brita. These pitchers use Granulated Activated Charcoal to remove some contaminants. They are less expensive than other filter options upfront, but do require frequent filling as well as cartridge replacement. The money and attention required make them more expensive in the long run, especially for large families. It’s important to know that because the carbon is not solid, these pitchers do not remove all toxins—but it will improve the taste.

It purifies water for a family of 4 for up to a year, removing major contaminants to below EPA minimum levels. Under $100, this system may be an affordable system solution as well. Have you heard of solid block carbon filters? These are recognized by the EPA as the best option for removing chemicals like herbicides, pesticides and VOCs. Quality carbon block filters will remove chemicals, pesticides, bacteria, fluoride (with filter attachment), heavy metals, nitrate, nitrites and parasites. Most are gravity based and can safely transform any type of water into safe drinking water. They do take up counter space and are more expensive up front. However, they work without electricity or running water and require fewer filter replacements. Plus they don’t remove naturally occurring minerals from the water. Many people report that this water tastes even better than bottled water.
